On April 28, 2026, Michael Prantner successfully defended his dissertation with honors at the iew.
His work focuses on the treatment of deep-seated, inoperable tumors through targeted heating of the diseased tissue using alternating magnetic fields. To achieve this, receiver systems measuring just a few millimeters are implanted using a minimally invasive procedure and then selectively stimulated inductively—and thus heated—by appropriately positioned transmitter coils located outside the body. This destroys the surrounding tumorous tissue without damaging healthy tissue. As part of his work, which he conducted externally at the company BOWA MEDICAL, Michael Prantner investigated different system topologies and performed numerical and analytical analyses of the system design to achieve the best possible power transfer while complying with applicable medical device guidelines. An experimental prototype demonstrates the feasibility and functionality of the designed system. In this way, his work makes a significant contribution to future tumor treatments.
