Most people have probably heard the term “ecological footprint” before. This sustainability concept describes how much of the Earth's usable land area a person needs to maintain a specific lifestyle over the long term. Unfortunately, this value (measured in global hectares) is often much higher than what is recommended per person, meaning that the Earth's resources are being depleted faster than they can be replenished.
Dr. Mathis Wackernagel, co-founder of the Ecological Footprint and president of the "Global Footprint Networks", draws attention to this issue.
>On May 20, 2026, we had the honor to welcome him here at the iew. After an introductory lab tour, which already sparked exciting and in-depth discussions, these conversations continued over lunch together.
In a subsequent university-wide workshop titled “Motivation as a Driver of Change,” the topic of sustainability was discussed in depth.
In addition, Mathis Wackernagel gave a public lecture that evening for anyone interested in Stuttgart city.
His remarks inspired us to reflect, think more deeply, and rethink our ecological mindset.
Dear Mathis, we would like to thank you very much for coming, for the exciting exchange, and for your commitment. You are always welcome here!
